Grajal de Campos

A historic place

Grajal de Campos is a small municipality in León, situated in the natural region of ‘Tierra de Campos’. The area’s characteristic landscape consists of vast undulating plains, interspersed with small hills and a few rivers. It was a grain-producing region in Roman Hispania and later came to be known as ‘the breadbasket of Spain’.

As we approach the village by road from the north, the first thing that catches our eye is the 16th-century CASTLE (a National Monument), a beautiful sight framed by the golden hues of the fields, the ochre tones of the earth and the green of the trees lining the banks of the nearby River Valderaduey.

But this little village, very close to the WAY OF ST. JAMES (World Heritage Site), has a RICH HISTORICAL AND MONUMENTAL HERITAGE to offer visitors, in addition to the spectacular view of the castle. As well as the numerous examples of traditional architecture, good food and fine wines, we find the RENAISSANCE PALACE (BIC), which stands in the centre of the village next to the CHURCH OF SAN MIGUEL, whose construction began in the late Gothic period and which features an IBERIAN ORGAN (currently awaiting restoration). There is also a large SQUARE, the CONVENT of ‘Nuestra Señora de la Antigua’ (which was inhabited by Franciscan monks and later by Discalced Carmelite nuns), the CHAPEL of the Virgin of Las Puertas and the HOSPITAL of Nuestra Señora de la Antigua.

What’s more, Grajal de Campos is free from crowds, so you can enjoy all of the above in peace and quiet. An invitation to savour life and music to the full, without haste or commotion.

How to get there

- The nearest airports are Madrid and Asturias

- Grajal de Campos has a railway station, just like Sahagún

- If necessary, the organisation would arrange transport between León, Palencia or Sahagún and Grajal de Campos using private cars
